Baton Rouge, LA

The Atchafalaya Basin, or Atchafalaya Swamp, is the largest wetland and swamp in the United States. Located in south central Louisiana, it is a combination of wetlands and River delta areas where the Atchafalaya River and the Gulf of Mexico converge.  Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, also a known as Louisiana Airborne Memorial Bridge, is a pair of parallel bridges in the U.S. State of Louisiana between Baton Rouge and Lafayette which carries Interstate 10 over the Atchafalaya Basin.  Atchafalaya Bridge, one of the 10 longest bridges in the world, 96,100 feet began construction in 1971 and was completed three years later in 1973.

Had an awesome tour of Louisiana's Old State Capitol Baton Rouge with a stunning view of the 1882 stained glass dome and exquisite architecture reflecting Victorian preferences.  Arrived in time to see a couple taking their engagement photos on the Old State Capitol steps.

Inside the Old State Capitol had several exhibits of the history of Baton Rouge, but our favorite was a movie with awesome special effects narriated by "The Ghost of the Capitol", Sarah Morgan, who lived in and is said to remain in what she called her castle.

December 28, 1862, Sarah's beloved castle was destroyed by fire while occupied by Federal Troops as barracks and prison.  The castle was rebuilt in 1880 - 1882.

Beautiful stained glass windows in the Old State Capitol.

Statue of Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, founder of New Orleans in 1717.

New State Capitol built by Huey Long in 1932.

Upon recommendation of hotel front desk staff, had an early dinner at Parrain's Seafood Restaurant with great Louisiana cuisine, excellent service and very personable staff and patrons, all big time LSU fans. 😊
